In order to the use the “ The Road to Cherbourg” battle set you will have to set up Close Combat so that it is running off your hard disc and not using the CD. To do this you will need to use the utility called Shrinkwrap (which is included with the Road to Cherbourg package) to create a disc image that fools Close Combat into thinking you have the CD inserted.
The Close Combat CD is nearly 300 megabytes and if your hard disc has enough space you can make a disc image this big. Alternatively you can make a disc image as small as 18 megabytes which will run Close Combat and still have room for the new battle set but it means getting rid of the videos which take up most of the space on the Close Combat CD. One advantage of running Close Combat off your hard drive is that the game and various battles will load much more quickly.
Instructions.
1: Launch Shrinkwrap and select the New Image item at the top of the Image menu. In the resulting dialogue box name the new image Close Combat CD, set the size to about 18 megabytes and make sure the Other button is selected (not the Floppy button). Press OK.
2: There should now be a disc called Close Combat CD on your desktop. In Shrinkwrap select the Create Image from Disc option in the Image menu and select the Close Combat disc on your desktop. Shrinkwrap will now write a file back to your hard disc, when prompted for a save location put it somewhere like your games folder - anywhere but not on the desktop. Everytime this new file is opened it mounts a Close Combat CD on your desktop as if a real CD were present.
3: Drag the Close Combat CD disc that is on the desktop to the Trash.
4: Insert the real Close Combat CD
5: launch Close Combat as usual and make sure the video option is off and quit the game.
6: Open the Close Combat CD and copy the contents of the Close Combat Data folder, but not the Videos folder, on to your hard drive.
7: Eject the Close Combat CD
8: Double click the image called Close Combat that you saved earlier, it will put a disc on your desktop called Close Combat CD. Open it and create a folder called Close Combat Data . Copy the contents of the Close Combat Data folder you copied earlier to your hard disc onto the Close Combat CD into the new folder called Close Combat Data. You will see a progress bar as the Data file is copied. Create an empty folder in the Close Combat Data folder on the CD called Videos. When you finished the Close Combat Data folder should look like this:
9: Start Close Combat without the real CD inserted to make sure everything is running OK. The game should run as if there was a CD inserted, if it does then quit the game. (If the game will not run it is because it cannot find a Close Combat CD on your desktop with the right folders inside. Make sure that there is a folder in the Close Combat CD called Close Combat Data and that this has four folders in it called Data, Graphics, Sounds and Videos).
10: Double click the Close Combat CD to open it and drag a copy of the Road to Cherbourg folder onto it and it will copy across.
11: Create a new folder on the Close Combat CD called Original Data.
12: Open the Close Combat Data folder and drag the folder called Data into the folder called Original Data.
13: Drag the Folder called Data out of the Road to Cherbourg folder and into the Close Combat Data folder
14: Launch Close Combat and the new battles should appear.
15: Crush the Germans and capture Cherbourg! (alternatively defend Cherbourg and crush the Americans)
Everytime you want to play the Road to Cherbourg just drag the new Data folder into the Close Combat Data folder and everytime you want to play the original battles just put the original Data folder back. It should only take a couple of seconds to change battle sets.
Make sure you always move the Data folder you don’t want to use out of the Close Combat Data folder first so you don’t accidentally overwrite any data folders while doing this.
If you make an alias of the Close Combat CD image file (not the disc that appears on your desktop) and put it in your Startup Items folder in your System Folder everytime you start your computer a CD will appear on your desktop called Close Combat CD.
Given the complexity of some of the new battles and maps it is probably a good idea to increase the memory allocated to the Close Combat game using the Get Info box.
The strength selection menus do work by the way so you can select the American and German strengths you want to play but Campaign mode does not work. You can also save replays as usual but to replay you must make sure that the data folder from the Road to Cherbourg is the active one otherwise it load the wrong maps.
